The project addresses an innovative and radical vision, enabled by a new technology concept that challenges current paradigms of high resolution strain detection for Geoscience and Geohazard monitoring. This design gives the opportunity to use an electronic readout far from the borehole and easily accessible out of the deep drilling.
This new sensor will give the possibility of detecting for the first time both the strain gradient along the same hole and the strain along different axis. The ultra-precision capabilities of the new instrument (down to 10-12) will offer the opportunity of detecting extremely small amplitude strain signals, which are expected to precede and accompany seismic events and volcanic eruptions.

Development of 3C-SiC material

3C-SiC material will be developed to obtain good mechanical properties for Nano Optical Mechanical Systems (NOMS).

Development of high sensitive strain-meter

NOMS strain sensor design, fabrication and testing, opto-electronic readout and NOMS strain meter tool design and manufacturing.

Strain meter testing

Testing in laboratory and in real sites, optimization and set up of an innovative monitoring system that will provide an extremely high precision frontier laboratory.
